A number of states are allowing or considering letting "dental therapists" pull teeth and fill cavities, in the place of dentists. Dental therapists are professionals with a lower level of training than dentists. They’re sometimes referred to as “advanced dental hygiene practitioners,” and they’re seen as a way to bring dental care to low-income, elderly and disabled people. They’re also an option for rural areas where there’s a shortage of dentists. In Massachusetts, a group that lobbies on behalf of dentists has signaled a willingness to embrace the concept for the first time. Dentists have long opposed the mid-level position, citing concerns over safety and supervision.
